Greco Vintage Japanese 1981 EG800C Violin Burst Les Paul Custom Japan FujiGen
Here’s a beautiful vintage 1981 "Super Real" era Greco EGC-800 Japanese Les Paul Custom in a scarce Violin Burst finish. This old beauty is from the transition period between the Super Real and the Mint Collection eras of Greco Japan—the best era for Greco guitars. It is well constructed with the "Open O" logo and a squared "Super Real" truss rod cover on the headstock. It is non-chambered, featuring a gorgeous, beautifully carved dark Violin Burst mahogany top. We don’t come across many old Japanese Greco Customs with tops like this.
It is clearly based on the '68 Custom but has a comfortable, slightly thicker neck profile with a good solid volute. It is voiced by immense-sounding Greco Maxon U-2000 humbuckers. This was one of the last Grecos to feature Maxon humbuckers before all electronics production was moved in-house at FujiGen.
It is in nice condition for an '80s Greco Les Paul. This is a higher-end model with a set neck, rather than a cheaper bolt-on, and it features the fret-end binding (nibs) consistent with the EGF800 and above models. There is some uniform vintage aging all over the plastics, with the white binding turning yellow and the original gold-plated nickel hardware starting to age with vintage wear and patina.
Condition-wise, this is one of the cleanest examples of a 1980s Greco EGC we have had at Gas Station Guitars. There are some scratches and minor blemishes, but it is very, very clean for the era. There are no electrical or structural issues. It has had absolutely no breaks or repairs and plays like a dream. The neck is straight with a comfortable '59 profile carve. The truss rod adjusts fine, and there is plenty of life left in the frets. The weight is a heavy and resonant 4.9kg. I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of the story. It comes complete with a hard case. This is one of the best examples you will ever see of this rare model.
