Gibson Memphis ES-335 Unique 2018 Prototype Satin Walnut w/ OHSC

A very special guitar here. Up for grabs is a 2018 Gibson Memphis 335 prototype. It looks to be the prototype of the 2018 Satin Walnut finish Memphis-built ES-335, although there are some subtle differences. In my opinion this looks much better than the regular model. It was acquired by a collector and has been a case queen from new. It has a beautiful looking maple top and back with some grain that really jumps out. The neck is quarter sawn mahogany with a nice chunky ’59 feel. It has the classic Gibson ES-335 Maple centre-block design and weighs in at 3.6kg. It has a bone nut with perloid block inlays, a very dark bound 12” radius rosewood fingerboard and fret-end binding. It is in all original condition with some monster sounding Burstbuckers and chrome Grover tuners. As mentioned above there are some nice differences between this and the regular production models you would have found in the stores back in 2018. It has great looking cream body binding that sets off the dark satin nitrocellulose finish perfectly. It is rounded off by vintage cream plastics including the ‘Memphis’ truss rod cover, pickguard, pick-up rings and switch-tip. The production model had all black plastics. The Burstbuckers are covered on this one whereas the production model were open black. Another difference is that all the metal hardware here is polished, the production model had satin finished nickel hardware. This prototype came with amber control knobs, the production model came with black witchhats. This one has the ‘Prototype’ designation on the label inside the f-hole and also the COA booklet. It has been a collector’s guitar so is in very clean ungigged condition. Obviously no blemishes, breaks, repairs fretwear, structural or electrical issues. It is perfect in every way. The little white specs you can see on the guitar are just dust. Complete with original tan OHSC. I’ll let the pics tell the rest of the story. Don’t miss this one as you’ll probably never get another shot at it. A great playing 335 and a serious investment piece.
